nokia podcasting application for S60

One of my favorite mobile applications I use while I’m on the move is mobile podcasting (also named mobcasting), I wrote about this before at the Wireless World Forum and at my personal blog here.

There are a lot of interesting podcasting discussions and interviews available on mobile and wireless, for example at thepodcastnetwork.com. Most files are 15-30 minutes discussions and if well encoded not bigger than 10-20 Mb files, so you can easily store the most interesting weekly podcasts on a 500 Mb stick.

It’s a great new way of consuming valuable information (not to forget about radio podcasts of course), I can listen to stuff that interests me whenever, wherever I want. As for now I just synchronise the podcasts from my PC to my cell phone memory stick but Gizmondo just reported that Nokia is going to launch a podcast application for S60 phones.

The initial releases of the Nokia Podcasting Application are the first steps toward the best mobile podcasting solution. (…) So the ultimate focus of the Nokia Podcasting Application is the world of Podcasting… search, discovery, preview, download, listen/watch, create, edit and uploading.

Jouni at S60 MRKTNGman blog says in his post:

Manual, automatic and scheduled update of Podcasts is possible over 3G or WLAN. If you use it over cellular, flat rate data packet is absolutely necessary. The application itself is independent of a particular service or service provider. You can preview audio and video Podcasts while they are downloading. Search engine provides URLs as OPML files for summary and easy subscription. Also sending and receiving of Podcasts & links is possible over Bluetooth or MMS.

So all we need now is a good flat rate package and we can download OTA podcasts without having to sync with the PC, great!

The free download podcast application will be available on www.nokia.com around early July. It’s compatible only with S60 3rd Edition.

It would be great to have some of your thoughts and impressions on your favourite mobile applications so feel free to post them here and discuss about.

I usually find podcasts when I surf the web (or via RSS feed). If I think they are of interest to me I download them to my phone and listen to them whenever convenient. So same application as you have. In the future phones with wireless lan inside will make it practicable to download them right over the air to the phone. I think that will come much sooner than cheaper 3G prices.

heh, just caught up with my feeds and see that you wrote about it just before i did (which you’ve likely seen).

really, the app shines with a wifi connections - zippy downloads.

one thing though, it would be great if there were some sort of proxy that would give the mp3s a band pass and channel reduction. most podcasts are high quality stereo. in most cases, that’s not needed and the extra space after reducing the quality is much welcome on a mobile.

    sigh.

    stil love using it though!
